Asia Cup 2023 Final India vs Sri Lanka | India Win's Trophy

The 2023 Asia Cup (also known as Super 11 Asia Cup for sponsorship reasons) was the 16th edition of the men's Asia Cup. The matches were played as One Day Internationals (ODIs) with Pakistan as the official host. It was held in Pakistan and Sri Lanka, between 30 August to 17 September 2023. The tournament was contested by 6 teams.[6] Sri Lanka were the defending champions.[7] It was the first Asia Cup to be held in multiple countries, with four matches being played in Pakistan and the remaining nine matches being played in Sri Lanka.

The five full members of the Asian Cricket Council were part of the tournament: Afghanistan, Bangladesh, India, Pakistan and Sri Lanka. They were joined by Nepal, who qualified by winning the 2023 ACC Men's Premier Cup. For the first time, the tournament was held in a "hybrid format" with the games organised in two countries. All teams played at least a few games in Pakistan, except for India, who refused to travel to Pakistan due to disapproval from the Indian Government.

Mohammed Siraj brought Sri Lanka down to their knees in just the first six overs of the match by picking a five-wicket haul in that period. Jasprit Bumrah started off with a wicket off the third ball and then Siraj just blew the top off the opposition's batting lineup by taking four wickets in the fourth over alone. He then came back and dismissed Sri Lanka captain Dasun Shanaka, thus completing his five-wicket haul in just his second over. Sri Lanka were thus left reeling at 12/6 in 5.4 overs at that point. The nightmare continued for the home side and Siraj went on record figures of 6/21, the best by any bowler in an ODI against Sri Lanka. Hardik Pandya got three wickets, wiping off the Sri Lankan innings with two back to back wickets in the first two balls of the 16th over. Sri Lanka were all out 50, their second lowest score ever in ODIs. India opened with Ishan Kishan and Shubman Gill and then pair put on 32 runs in just three overs. They soldiered on and chased down the total in the seventh over and India thus won the final with 10 wickets and 263 balls to spare.

Mohammed Siraj wins player of the match for his figures of 6/21. No surprises today. He says that he is dedicating the cash prize he is getting for this award to the ground staff at the Premadasa.

India lift the trophy!

Mohammed Siraj conjured a magical spell of seam and swing bowling with magnificent figures of 6 for 21 as India crushed Sri Lanka by 10 wickets to lift the Asia Cup title after a gap of five years. This was India’s eighth Asia Cup title and also their biggest victory (263 balls) in ODIs in terms of balls remaining.

Siraj’s astonishing effort saw defending champions Sri Lanka getting bundled out for 50. India did not bat an eyelid in the chase, as Shubman Gill (27) and Ishan Kishan (23) did the job in just 6.1 overs. This was India’s first title in a multi-nation event after their triumph in the Asia Cup 2018, and in a way, it also exorcised the ghost of India’s 54 all out against Lanka in the Coca Cola Champions Trophy at Sharjah in 2000.

Rohit collects it from ACC president and BCCI secretary Jay Shah. He then hands it to the younger players in the squad, as the Indian captains have done since MS Dhoni began that tradition all those years back. Well, just over a month ago there were question marks all over the Indian lineup but over the course of this tournament India have played with a largely consistent XI. They have also shown that injuries to players, especially batters, is nothing more than an opportunity for a very talented younger player on the sidelines. It means that Shreyas Iyer may have to possibly fight for his place considering just how solid Ishan Kishan has looked, regardless of where he has batted. Their bowling lineup is currently screaming firepower thanks to Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Siraj and Kuldeep Yadav. So much so that someone of Mohammed Shami's calibre and experience is not getting a spot. They have won their eighth Asia Cup title on a canter and sounded off a warning to all the other teams they will be hosting in the World Cup next month. This is their home and they won't be easy to beat. That's it from us for today and for this tournament, hope you had as much fun following it with us as we had in bringing it to you. Goodbye!

What Siraj said

No biryani here. Have been bowling well since a long time. Was missing the edges earlier. But found them today. The wicket was seaming earlier, but there was swing today. Thought that I will bowl fuller because of the swing. When there's good bonding between fast bowlers, it's helpful for the team. I was thinking it would be great if I could stop the boundary. My best spell. This cash prize goes to the groundsmen. This tournament wouldn't have been possible without them.”
